CAPTCHA is a very old technological thing that is still being used in many websites to verify human presence or reduce spam and abuse of services. You have seen it with almost every registration forms you submit, there is this hard to read image with some characters that you need to enter correctly to successfully submit the form.

Google has created a new technology that is used in its Google Street View to identify the address from images and this is how it identify the location of coffee shops and restaurants near you. This new technology finds and reads street numbers in Street View and combine them with existing address to identify their exact location on Google Maps.

CAPTCHA codes that been solved correctly by the new algorithm.

Fortunately this new technology’s algorithm also can solve some of the reCAPTCHA (Free CAPTCHA service from Google itself), actually this new algorithm can solve CAPTCHA with 99% accuracy! That’s amazing right. This also shows how CAPTCHAs aren’t effecting to identify humans from machines.

Google says this research doesn’t mean that reCAPTHCA is broken, but rather this research will give more insight on how the CAPTCHAs can be created effectively in the future.

For more information on reCAPTCHA check their site, and read the research paper here.
