NGC 2841 : One of The Massive Galaxies Known

Just 46 million light years away, NGC 2841 is a massive spiral galaxy, that is bigger than out own Milky Way galaxy. It is in northern constellation of Ursa Major, It has beautiful yellow galactic nucleus.

Pink areas are new star forming regions, and you can also see young blue stars. This galaxy looks like elliptical galaxy, but this is really a spiral galaxy with its arms are tightly packed, many of the spiral galaxies have sweeping arms, but this galaxy is different.

NGC 2841 is almost 150,000 light years across, comparing with our own galaxy Milky Way, which is 100,000 light years across. The following image is a composite of space based Hubble Space Telescope (2.4 meter) and ground based Subaru telescope (8.2 meter).

X-ray images from Chandra Telescope shows hot gases extending around the galaxy as a result of stellar explosions of supernova and this expands rapidly. Chandra’s X-ray image of this galaxy NCG 2841 is a direct evidence for it.
