With the new Windows 8.1 Update 1, Microsoft has made many changes to its Windows platform. There is always one problem with Windows on tablets - its size. Even on Microsoft Surface 2 out of 32GB space, 14GB is gone for Windows installation and that seems like too bad for people buying the device believing they have 32GB but only later to know half of it is already occupied.
Now, Microsoft has come up with new idea that saves ton of space on those small storage devices. With this new WIMBoot, Windows installation will as small as 4GB so when you have 16GB device, you will be left with 12GB, that is impressive right.
Well there is always a trading part, with this new installation method, Windows wont unpack all the files into a partition, rather it will keep a WIM file (Install.wim) - compressed installation image and make pointer files to point to its contents. Since now it is a compress file there will be some performance hit, that is why the required devices should be running on speedier flash drives.
This will be a great thing for devices running on low storage and now can have much more free space for the users.
